Importing DWG Files as a Layout Background

Scaled blocks will not import correctly

If, after the background is imported to the layout, blocks are misplaced check in AutoCad whether blocks in the DWG have been scaled up or down. The X, Y & Z scale of a block’s properties should be 1.

After amending the X,Y or Z scale of a block it will need to be dragged back to its original location in the drawing to ensure it appears in the right place when the layout background is imported.

Check the units in which a DWG is drawn

If an imported layout background is too large or too small check whether the drawing units selected during the import process in the background importer wizard match those used in the DWG. If needs be the unit scale used in a drawing can be confirmed using a free DWG viewer application by measuring a door. A standard door would be roughly 900mm or 3 foot or 36 inches.

Only import necessary layers

When importing a floorplan DWG to improve performance, in particular the time it takes to open a floor plan, it is advisable in the Background Importer Wizard preview layers section to turn off all layers which will not be needed.
